...should I do it right after I move in, or would it be better to wait awhile and get a feel for the place?

You are better off waiting.
Regardless of color or natural light you have other issues to consider.
Moving in can damage walls and trim. New homes tend to settle creating nail pops and cracks.
It is always better to wait and let this occur.
Start to decorate, room-by-room, at least 6 months after you move in.

Not sure about you friend, but the longer I wait, the lazier I get and something else always seems to pop up. Moving that furniture around is a pain also. Guess you could go with the usual new home beige and white rooms until you decide on colors. Plus all the other jobs you have to do surely will keep you busy, guess painting can wait after all.

I'd move in first and then decide the color palette I'd want to use.
See how the light plays in each room during different times of the day, determine which rooms you spend the most time in, see how your furniture works with your new home, etc. Maybe your sofa won't work or you want to purchase an entertainment armoire - you'll be able to choose what you want without being pressured to match it to the walls you've just painted!

I would have said paint before you move in, simply because it makes things so much easier when and only if you know what colour scheme you wish to create.
Otherwise, yes I would wait.
I moved into my place a year ago, it was empty and I could have had it all done, but decided to wait. I'm glad I did.

I would wait. Get a feel for the place and your belongings and then decide what feel you want in your space. Light plays a lot in a room, do you want the room to feel intimate and inviting, bright and cheery, or do you want a monotone feeling. Move your furniture in and see what it feels like. I've owned five homes, four brand new and I've painted them all myself. Good luck!!!

Ok Ok Ok.......wait. I know you're going to anyway. Do what I did. I didn't know what color I wanted to I bought a quart of three different colors. Then took a roller and started painting different walls with a stripe. I'd have three stripes (one for each color) on each wall. I could see how they looked at different times of the day with the sunlight coming in. I ended up choosing a color I swore I would never have chosen in the beginning. So ok.....take the advice of the people that said to wait. But you will hate moving your furniture twice. Nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah (tongue out)

I personally would give it a minute. It might be nice to see how the sun hits the walls at different times. Get a feel for how the furniture fills the room and what lighting fixtures you will be using. It is easy to pick colors for an empty room but it always looks different once you fill it.

Paint before you move in because it is a lot easier than moving everything around again.

Do it while the place is empty, and make sure all the windows are closed. Those rumors that paint fumes are bad for you are totally wroooooooOo0oD@

Paint bedrooms and laundry room now--otherwise feel away.
You never want to be w/o a place to sleep--and you don't want to move a washer and dryer.
