regretfully decline the invitation, or borrow something from someone.

Well, there are a few options you could pursue.
Are you and your friend (the friend you are closest to) close in size? Would she have an outfit you could borrow? Or maybe something you can mix and match with something you already have?
Believe it or not, you should also try thrift stores or consignment stores. I've found some really fabuous stuff there before for relatively low prices.
How important is the event? Is it imperative that you go? If it is, then be persistent and I'm sure you will find a way. And are you sure that there is nothing in your wardrobe that will do? I know I get nervous before a big event and just KNOW I don't have anything great to wear.
If the event isn't all that important to you, you could always beg off.....But try the thrift stores and your friend first. You'll be suprised at what you can find.

Borrow something from them to wear...or .. just put together something nice and decent you have. I am sure you will be fine. If you want to go,,then go and do not worry about what other people might think of you. People will talk about you no matter if you were wearing the latest trend, so just go and have fun and maybe make a new friend or two.

This is a situation where is really pays to have great friends with good taste in fashion.
Locate a nearby friend who would be willing to let you borrow a chic outfit for the event. Make sure they are generally your size. If you have enough time, you might even be able to ask your friend if they know anyone in your size with an outfit to lend. Most times, someone who doesn't know you (but knows your friend) will be willing to lend the outfit to the friend to lend to you.

Update what you already have, add a pin, a ribbon or some lace, do your hair in a completely unexpected style and put on a pair of heels, add a great perfume a great smile and have a great time. Good luck.

Borrow something from a friend of the same size or just wear the best thing you got. You could just get sick and not go.

Consider what you already have in your closet and try a new combination of a nice top and skirt/pants, or try to do up an outfit with accessories.
If you are any good at sewing, make an outfit for yourself that is appropriate, or alter another outfit that would be nicer if only....

Borrow something from a sister or friend. Or, go to a consignment shop and see what they have for sale. Or rent. Not only tuxes are rented nowdays. You can also rent formal dresses.
You may have to spend a little, but not a lot, to get to this gathering. (I am assuming you want to go.)

See if you could borrow something from another friend. If you can't... you could probably find something in your closet to wear. Otherwise, if you really don't want to go make some excuse as to why you can't.

If you know someone close to your size, borrow something. Also check out local vintage/thrift shops, sometimes you can find something really cute for really cheap!
