Well I don't know how they do it in you part of the woods, but I was homeless for 7 years.
It was the thanks I got from the 90's liberals for providing jobs, home and a safe environment for my family. (but that's another story)
I kept a job all those years and it became a way of life. It took 5 years to pay off my Federal tax burden and finally returned to having a roof over my head again.
I got to tell you a lot of the homeless I knew one way or the other simply want to be left alone, some of them think they have a good thing going for them self. Some (well a lot) have drug problems and don't want to be in the loop for fear of getting caught, some gamble away every penny they bum on the street.
For some they have little cons that they work on every day to try to work them to perfection, some make more money than the middle class with the cons but don't know or want to manage it to build a "normal life"
For a lot of them the first rung on the ladder to just getting started after school was just to high, so they never got tricked into being a responsible "normal" person.
Some of the VETS I knew, well lets say "didn't ever pilot a ship of their own" but I think that's a whole other subset of the homeless. The military normally provides half way houses for their true wayward vets.
Just remember you could be just one election away from being homeless yourself.

First I don't know why you include this "obviously" heart wrenching and important post in IMMIGRATION.
If your point WAS.....that all the illegal immigrants are trying to justify their cause. Your point was so lost behind the MORE IMPORTANT CAUSE ......that we have too many HOMELESS and ALOT are VETS.....and being a VET....I find that RIDICULOUS.
My theory.....my simple theory. This immigration fight is a sideshow for the real show. How we have let down our OWN and how we allow those with money and power to manipulate us.
But.....to get back to your post. They.... those who don't have a REAL home.....they get by because pride does not allow them to do otherwise.
This incredible post would be so better served in "community service" or some other place. Again I say "We should be looking out for our neighbor before we start looking at what is coming down the street".
Peace

how do you know these starving people are vets, penniless ore even homeless? and if you don't want to work? or spending all there money u give them on drugs? in Minnesota we have people who stand out on the road with signs. they are an organized group. i drive cab so i see them a lot. once i was waiting for a customer to return from picking up something at Walgreen's. there was a man with a sign that said "Homeless. please help. god bless" as we were passing by, the woman customer i had said "oh that poor man" so while she was in the store i was watching him. he wasn't getting much luck, so he grabbed his back pack, shuffled across the street onto the same parking lot i was in, looked around, and got into a 2004 Pontiac and drove away!! this is a true story!!! you don't know who these people are!! how do you know if this or that person is a vet? plenty of programs out there to help vets and the disabled or anyone to get on their feet!! don't give them another dollar so they can buy another shot!! giving them nothing is better for them!!

I'm fortunate that don't have to answer that question for myself and I hope to never be in that situation. I also feel for all those that are in poverty and wish they weren't in that situation.
One thing I can add to your question is that my parents came here as legal immigrants after WWII and after years of working for a living my dad was laid off.
When his unemployment check came he took it begrudgingly and thought it was his duty to pay it back since it was not earned. He never paid the money back because he didn't know how. I recall really struggling while growing up but one thing I can always say about my dad is that he has integrity and never accepts anything from anyone without earning it.
Stealing to avoid death or starvation may be one thing but knowingly breaking the law and taking free social services as handouts may be quite something else. What kind of example are we setting for the next generation if we teach that it is acceptable to break the law if you're not living as nicely as you think you should?

Isn't this standard? Isn't living within your means and within the law how everyone behaves? I mean, I get that there are criminals out there, but they're (hopefully) the exception to the rule.
When you don't have money for dinner, do you steal? I don't, to be sure, and there are days when finding dinner is a challenge.
I don't really see honesty and poverty as alternatives to each other.
I'm intrigued to read the rest of the answers to this question.
