Get a genealogy program ($29 for Roots magic) and start digging. Ask your oldest living relatives about their lives and their parents; they will die, paper can wait. These sites may have some data you can use:

Start with what you've got, and put it all down in an organized chart. Then start backtracking. If you are lucky enough to have grands and great grands still living, you may be able to get some good information from them. If your family immigrated to the country where you now live, you may be able to find something in the immigration lists. If you know where the family lived, check the schools - especially the older schools and the universities -- to see if anyone is listed who has a similar name. Check the church registries. They often have good information. Write a letter to the Bureau of Vital Statistics and ask for their help.
When you're searching be aware that spelling wasn't a big deal a few generations ago, and at times different members of the same family spelled their names differently, so if you find something that looks close, make a note of it and trace that back too. Eventually, it may link up with other information you have uncovered.
Good luck!

ask around the family. There is likely someone who has a family tree started. Start with you and your siblings, then your parents and their siblings and see how far you can get on just your knowledge. Sometimes the whole interent thing doesn't work because not every single person is recorded online. Well, good luck and talk to your family! Great aunt's and uncles are usually good at that sort of thing. Talk to your elders in the family.

If you are young it is good to go to people in your family and ask as many questions as possible like who thier parents were, where they were from children whatever info you can possibly get. I know this from experience because when I started my family tree the elder people that could have been the most help had already past away. So I urge you to ask as many questions to as many people as you can and write it all down. It is really important.
I started my family tree and it has really grown. Start with what you know and then add on as you find info.

Start with yourself. Then move on to your parents. Then list all of your parents siblings, then your parents parents, and so on. Talk with your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles. There are alot of different internet sites out there to use, and alot of them cost. We've had luck just by going to yahoo or goggle and typing in the last name and searching it that way. If you really get into doing this, you can go to courthouses, and look up birth certificates, etc. Libraries should have information too, like census's. Good Luck and have fun.

if you want to do all the work yourself, you would have to search through birth records to find out the parents of your grandparents, and so on. it would help a great deal to talk to members of your family to find out as much information as possible before hand.
