We got our first VCR in 1978... it was a top loading beta max and it weighed about as much as a Volkswagen. There was no remote control save for a long wired in switch that you could use to pause the tape. It generated enough heat to warm a small apartment in the winter time but we loved it. It was two years before there was a place (fifty miles away) to rent movies, so we didn't get much use out of it at first. I think it cost $800 new when we bought it.

cassette tape recorders - portable. no web site. this is based on my personal experience. I received one in '78 for Christmas. IT was heavy as an elephant. Mono of course. But it was definitely innovative.
