Which drought?
The strategy will depend on where you live.

*For most Aussies the best one would be to get rid of your top loading washer, yes we love em as they're a national icon but they're so wasteful they've gotta go. Wasteful agricultural techniques also need to be adressed. Updating the way we do farming would go a long way to helping.

*Boycott Coca-cola and other such soft drink manufacturers. Each litre requires 10 litres of water to make it. The government doesn't wan't to push restrictions on commercial water usage ("oh no we don't wan't to upset the economy") despite this being the major source of water wastage.

*Getting a water tank also seems to be in fashion and does help a bit.

*For all those landcruiser moms: A 4WD is meant to look dirty.

The following household hints also are helpful if you don't mind being labelled povo":

*Use your bath water to flush the toilet (it's 11 litres every time you push that button)
*Family showers/baths (Hey we all did it when we were kids).
*Handwashing when you have large quantites of items to wash. It does use less than washers (dish and clothes) if you're circumspect on the amount of water you use in the sink. Rainwater is fine for washing with.

I have a few suggestions that I live by. I live in a high elevation desert so water is at a premium. On a really basic level you can only water your lawn when the sun is not up. That will prevent you from losing water to evaporation before it even hits the lawn. You can also only flush when you go #2, only shower every other day, and make sure you don't run the water while you brush your teeth. You can also avoid hand washing dishes as much as possible. Believe it or not a dish washing ,machine uses less water than most people use hand washing. Then if you want to get really serious about saving water you can install low flow toilets and conservation shower heads. Landscaping can be an easy way to save water. Make sure you plant native plants and grasses as much as possible. There is also a style called xeriscaping which requires no water. That is a bigger deal in the desert where I live. But there are lots of things an individual can do in this drought. Thanks for asking!

well there are alot of ways to save water. Since I live in Arizona it's always an issue. First if you want a green lawn live some place where it rains. There are beautiful desert landscapes here. If you do have to water some trees than do it in the evening when it isn't so hot. If you are a restaurant owner don't serve water unless people want it. Those 8 ounce glasses add up. They make water saving toilets. It also doesn't take a half an hour for a shower. I mean I can get everything clean in a couple of minutes. If you want a message go to a ma sues. Fix leaky facets

For the bigger picture If you drive to work pick up your fellow employees with the gas prices what they are it's a win win situation. If you live in a metro area that doesn't have mass transit start hounding your elected officials to get some put in.

Just a couple off the top of my head.

Jesus human beings - the Cardinals final 365 days have been the exception to the guideline. It won't ensue. The Cubs have an extremely streaky offense, and that they do no longer hit the long ball nicely. Their bullpen minus Howry and Marmol are terrible an excellent style of the time. The protection is merely established. The baserunning is pathetic an excellent style of the time. And the catchers can't throw out absolutely everyone! this is why they have been not extra effective than around .500 an excellent style of the 365 days! they don't have adequate to win the mandatory 11 video games. evaluate this - the final time the Cubs gained a team against a triumphing team - previous due June!! against the Brewers who have been suffering already! The Cubs are no longer that stable!

I'm sorry, but the person who thinks that a water national grid is feasible is probably not an engineer.

It's difficult enough preventing leaks on the current mains infrastructure already - Thames water a prime example.

To conserve water, you should use a variable flush (even consider flushing solids only), brush your teeth with the tap off, wash full loads of laundry and only wash dirty crockery daily or less often ( this one is less important especially if the houseflies start coming)

tell Blair he's a **** for not putting in a grid system on our water like he should of done years ago.
if he had water could be easily piped round the country (like it is in most other developed nations).

but governments always say 'is to expensive to deal with now' and push it to the back of the pile. now their paying a higher price than money.

of course now they want to put up the water rate again. which means that devon, that already pays twice the london rate, will also pay more. even though avrage devon income is 13k and london is much higher than that (over 30k). wankers.

Be concious of the amount of water you are using and cut it down where possible.

i.e. less water in baths.

Putting a water displacement block into toilet tank (small bottle full of water with top on will save that amount on every flush.

Wash you car less - or stop washing it.

Do not build houses without asking the water companies if they have enough water to supply them (really really obvious this one)

Use waste water - bath water etc. to water plants grass etc. instead of putting it down sink - saop does not harm plants.

its the little things that add up like
not leaving the tap running all the way through when cleaning your teeth
wash car less
take bath not shower (its supposed to use less water)
imagine if everyone in the UK did that, what a difference it would make!
We should all stop to think how lucky we are once in a while as we take it all for granted

Beat to death the drainage engineers who modified our waterways & drainage systems back in around the 1960's / 1970's to get the rain water back out to sea as quickly as possible instead of soaking into the ground (then let the pipes get into a crappy state of repair) in order to prevent flooding.

Make sure the washers in your taps aren't leaking.

Take a shower instead of a bath.

Try to collect rain water in suitable containers to water your garden / greenhouse with instead of a hosepipe.
