I've just bought a Canon 30D digital SLR and my old 70-300 telephoto lens won't work so I need to upgrade.
What's the best lens to get? I mostly do wildlife and sports photos with this lens, sometimes in poor light. And I'm an enthusiastic amateur on (a bit of) a budget.
Thanks!

If your old 70-300 was for a Canon EOS mount, I don't understand why it wouldn't work on your 30D. If it had AF and was made by a third party, perhaps the AF doesn't work...
Also, if you were happy with 300mm max zoom on 35mm, you can achieve the same with a 200mm lens on the 30D. The 30D has a focal length multiplier of 1.6. (So a 300mm lens is effectively 480mm on your 30D).
And if you're coming from film, you'll be pleased to know that you can take very decent shots at ISO 1600 and even 3200. Perhaps this means that you can live with a slower lens. (AF speed and accuracy usually suffer too, however)
3 top rate options for different budgets:
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM ($1700)
Canon 70-200mm f/4 L USM ($550)
Sigma 50-500mm f4-6.3 EX DG APO RF HSM ($1000)

If which you will arise with the money for it, it is advisable to spend further for the Canon or Nikon (i'm a Nikon fan) so to desire to alter into the digital digicam as your understanding make stronger.
