Applications for the renewal of an expiring 10 year green card should be made within 6 months before expiration. You can find further instructions on renewal at USCIS' website: http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/howdoi/renew.htm

You are suppose to apply for the new one 6 months before the expiration date...all of this information was on the forms you signed when you received it!! Don't forget...it never really expires (if you have a unrestricted green card, no Conditional Statuses). We just need a new copy of your photo and to check for any deportable violations.

you probably shouldn't renew it. You might wanna go ahead and pack your belongings up. It's a long ride back to your country. Don't let the imaginary American door hit you on the way out.
