...it turns off after a few seconds. What is wrong? How can I fix it? It is the kind with the toothpaste inside.

Most likely you didn't let the battery get fully charged the first few times before using it..... the more you do that, the less charge the battery can hold + you can only recharge them so many times before they can't be charged anymore and need replacing.

So, my best guess is that the battery is f***ed to the point where it can't be recharged fully anymore,

My guess is that you let the battery die. When you charge something and it's fully charged, you're suppose to take it out. If you keep charging it when it's full or half full, you drain the battery life and in the end it usually is a crap-shoot and doesn't work anymore.
