The idea between the two comes from Greek thought first posed by Plato/Aristotle. It centers around the question of "where did your conception come from?" If you attribute it to yourself, then it is knowledge, if you attribute it to a spiritual realm it is faith.

They are not always distinct, you can have both faith and knowledge that something is true or exists.

Knowledge is a part of faith but mere head knowledge is not true faith. True faith is a true knowledge or a knowledge of the truth but also believing it personally. Believing Jesus existed 2 thousand years ago is not saving faith but knowing He died for your sins is.
