Activities that involve moving the whole body as one unit are the best and most calorie burning. Activities such as power walking especially uphill, sprint work, swimming, road biking especially up hill.

Stationary bikes and treadmills are good but I personally consider them a class B for what you are wanting.

The best exercise by far for calorie burning and because it's competitive you don't realise how much you're doing.

Only downside is that it's VERY hard on the joints (hips, knees and ankles), but if you play 3 times a week for half an hour you will have burned as many calories as cycling or running for 3 hours.
