There are different shapes for cakes, you just need a theme and check with bakers or bakeries in your area. I do cakes, and I always try to do different things. You can do it yourself, but the hard thing will be decorate. But you can use whipped cream and sprinkles to decorate, will be easy at your age.

First choose the flavor. Cherry Chip is a good color for a 13 year old if she'd into pink. If she likes Barbie, bake the cake in a 2 1-1/2 qt. glass mixing bowls. Grease and flour them and bake at 325 until they test done... may take a little longer. Use a paring knife or apple corer to remove the very center and insert the bottom part of a doll, leaving the torso and head showing. Frost the cakes (two dolls) using a thin coat of canned frosting and then decorate their "gowns" with icing gel or tube icing.
Wilton carries a pan called the Wonder Mold for this and will make a large cake for one doll (includes instructions). If you don't have the money, make it like this for two smaller dolls. Any icing can be washed from the dolls after the cake is gone.

I used to be a cake decorator at a cookie shop. The best cakes I ever gave anyone were the cookie cakes I made there. I suggest getting a custom made cookie cake. If you find a good decorator, they can put just about anything you want on them. And I wouldn't go to a fancy bakery first, they're too expensive and they give you a pattern book to choose from. If you have a Cookie Store in your mall, I'd go there. The teenagers in their part-time summer jobs have more creative and colorful minds that would match a 13 year old than the old ladies that work in bakeries.

You could make her an ice-cream cake. Or try making a regular white cake mix and then add in some drops of different colors of food coloring and swirl them around but don't swirl them all the way...if you only swirl them in a little, it'll be swirled when you cut into the cake. Then just top it with whatever you want! :)

YES- Lots of places now make cakes wher they can actually laser a real photo onto the cake. Got a picture of the both of you or of her with her favorite pet? (Don't worry - the picture itself won't be stuck on the cake at all, they just copy it. And yes, you can eat the cake as it is!) Try it. Ask for laser design on a cake at the bakery.

Try looking online for cool cakes... but even if it is just a square one, you can personalize the top by buying icing pens. You can write a quote or saying that is special to the two of you, write her name and decorate it, or just add your own personal touch! Knowing you put that extra effort in, she'll love it!

On my friends birthday I had a cake made that had a picture of a celebrity she's obsessed with on it. She LOVED it. Most bakery's can do it.

decorate it with fresh flowers.

another good idea, if you think she'd like it, is a lemon cake with a layer of thin sliced strawberries in the middle, or raspberry jam.
