Many kids will "backslide" during their toddler years to messing their pants. Has anything changed in your home or other enviroment lately? New sibling, different school/daycare/babysitter, it could be a sign of stress, maybe acting out for attention. My son is 4 1/2 and when my daughter, who is now 7 mo. old, was born, I went thru the same thing for a few months with him. I basically had to sit him down and have a talk with him. I explained that he is the big brother/big boy and it is not ok for him to mess his pants. I said that his sister doesn't know that she has to use the potty and that will be something that he can help her learn when she gets older. I also said that if he kept messing his pants, he would not be able to go to the park, shopping, McDonald's or out with me, because other people wouldn't like to be around him if he was smelly and dirty. I kept it simple and in kid terms, and it finally resolved itself. Good luck, keep cool and don't get too mad at him and it should be fine.

Is there any thing going on in your guys life? Any big changes, new baby sitter, moving, new baby, etc? The reason I ask is because my son did the same thing some what. I didn't know what was going on and I brought him to our doctor to find out why he was having accidents and all that. The doctor asked if there was any thing new going on, or any thing that would stress him out. My friend and her 1 1/2 year old had been staying with us for a month and when I told the doctor he said that was probably what was causing it. He said children have no control over their lives, we as parents decide who they play with, what they eat, when they sleep, etc. So when they are stressed out they will act it out by wetting their pants, peeing in inappropriate places, and stuff like that, because that is one thing that they have control over.
It could be just a minor thing, like a new baby in the house and he is jealous, or it could be a major thing, like a baby sitter who is abusing him. You should sit down with your son and talk about why he is doing it and ask if there is any thing that is making him mad or sad. You should go to your doctor too, just to be sure that every thing is fine and it isnt a health thing or some thing else.
Good Luck.

I don't know what makes them start that back up, my son did this for awhile and then I started making him clean himself up afterwards. At first this is hard to do because they leave a mess, just tell them to take a shower. For some reason they are better at going to the bathroom when they don't think you'll be paying attention. Best wishes

First, take him to the doctor. Find out if he has a problem. A lot of kids are simply not physically ready. Many kids suffer from parents punishing them for something they have no control of.

treat him like a baby...dont let him have any rewards of being a "big boy" since he doesn't want to be a big boy....he wants to see if you will keep babying him even though he is too big for babying....
