With two wars plus the 'war on terror' this is the absolute worst time for anybody to be in the military.

This war has had an extraordinaraly low casualty rate compared to the number of servicemen and their tours in country. Technology has never been more advanced some of that on the field now and has saved innumerable lives. The standard issue body armor (not the flak jackets) can stop several ak rounds without serious injury. Granted not all units have the best of equipment, they still have an overwhelming advantage on the battlefield. The casualty rate is just under 1 percent...meaning that fewer than one of a hundred are injured or killed. Compared to the staggering numbers seen in previous wars, now is the safest time to be in the military during a conflict.

Yes, I do. I think we need to get our military back up to snuff compared to the rest of the world. During the Clinton years, our military really took a downfall in numbers. Not that I want ANY of our children in harms way, but to protect our great nation, yes. I think it would be a good thing for them to do.

Especially those young people that do not have plans for college. They can learn a trade and earn an education in the military. There are many great things that our military provides to these young people. I would hire an honorably discharged veteran any day over just another person who applied for a job. I would recommend it.

I think everyone should serve 2 years mandatory service. It teaches team work, comraderier, appreciation for America, plus it gives you real world experience of other cultures. I think one of the problems today most of what young people experience as far as foreign cultures is only done through the eyes of the news media and not through thier own eyes. The media edits and shows only what they want you to see. If not the military peace corp or something to give experience you can only learn first hand.

Well,if you're an underprivileged grad with no job prospects or educational opportunities it's always a good time to join.
It's called poverty(or social-economic servitude,as i like to call it)and it is america's armed forces most powerful recruitment tool.
There are also those, amazingly enough, who believe that this war
is being fought for american liberties and that america is strong enough to stand stubbornly defiant in the face of global power shifts(recent developements with iran are proving otherwise).
So,for those people mentioned above(the poor youth and the "Go Team America" meatheads)it's a great time to be in the armed forces.O.K. maybe not for the poor, but what other options are they given.

It's ALWAYS a good time to join the military. Now the question is - which armed service should they join?

No, what are you crazy? Go get killed in Iraq after you spent all that money in college to become educated? Maybe if you just graduated high school and aren't going to college.

No one really has the right to decide that but those wanting to serve. It's their choice not ours. If they are willingto serve and are wanting to than what are we to sit here at our computers and talk about what their lives should be. At least they have lives.
