Although the Starbuck series by Bernard Cornwall is fictional, it comes from one of the finest writers of this genre in the world and will probably teach you as much about this as any number of non-fictional accounts. Rebel, Copperhead, Battle Flag and The Bloody Ground are thoroughly readable and thoroughly recommended. I've been through them three times now.

They had very hard contitions. Disease was everywhere. A lot of men died do to disease. Several men had to share tents. There were little protection to the weather. They wore wool uniforms and a lot of soliders overheated. Water wasn't very clean. Some times thoes who knew how to play in instrument would play for other soliders. Others would write letters home to friends and families. Sometimes they played cards.

It was dirty and miserable for the most part. Some men didn't have tents, and had to just sleep out in the open. many of the soldiers had lice, and didn't get a chance to bathe often.
Uniforms and shoes wore out, so they weren't well protected from the elements.

Well, I can't imagine that living with up to 100,000 people on just a few acres of land without toilets, and good medical practices would be peachy!

the black soldiers from the east had no warm clothes or proper guns ....they had no boots...they had poor rations though they were so proud to be part of this sad war...as all wars are sad...the way that our country still treats the black people humbles me ...I'm ashamed they treat foreigners far better ...I'm not of the African American that is solely my opinion....
