Hi.
I learned that cats need to see moving water because, to them, stagnant water is unsafe. It's hoped this answer helps.
Someone who gave you another answer said she uses a towel and a cookie sheet. That's a good idea.

He's not playing in it. He's using it to clean himself. My female cat does this, just not in the same big mess as your cat does. I've moved her food bowl a bit further away from her water bowl to avoid the mushy dry food issue. I also bought a few cheap dishtowels to put under her water bowl. This way, the water stays off the floor & when the towel is damp or wet, I change it & put a dry one down.

Funny that, my cat does it too. I got she a heavier bowl and she does not seem to do it as much now. But I must say she does drink out of my vase more than any thing. Good luck, but remember she/he is only playing with the water and not being naughty.

Good Luck, my cat has been playing with her water bowl now for 11 years, she has to walk around it several times, scratch at the floor and then spills it. I just think cats are nuts when it comes to water.

"I want him to..." may be the problem. HE wants to play with his water.
This is normal for some cats, and he just enjoys it. Try putting his bowl in a shallow dish to catch the water that he spills. You really won't be able to stop this unless you stand over him when he drinks and tell him "no" over and over. Try moving his water away from his food. Lots of cats don't like it near their food anyway. My cats have a mega-size cappucino cup that sits on one of my end tables in my living room. They dictated, I complied.

my cat does that too and at this point, we've given up trying to fight it. I put the bowl on a towel on a small cookie sheet.

my cat Joey does this...i think he has depth perception problems...he is making sure of the water level so he doesnt get it up his nose....i keep a thick heavy glass on the coffee table for my kitties (spoiled aren't they?) and i think it is easier for him to see the water level now cause he doesn't do it as much now.....
