I recieved an old Pavilion 7370v office system on death of in-law. I'm trying to see if I can get it functional for use or donation. It has no manuals, CDs, etc. It has Windows ME OEM, but a lot of programs don't function, cd rom playback on all players is messed up, and some dlls and other cabs and things are missing. System Restore will only allow you to go back to one date in 1989, but after restoring it, nothing changes. Is their a program I can buy that will check and reinstall missing component applications? Or is there some way to get System restore to access more recent restore points not showing up on access, as I know there were many according to his wife. Or any other suggestions? Thanks

If you plan to keep the computer, then check out Microsoft's web site to see if this computer is able to handle Microsoft Windows XP.

If it can't, or you don't want to pay to have to upgrade parts/software, then I would just give it to computer store that recycles parts.

I looked up the specs for this system on HP's website - it's a 1997 vintage PC, with a 200 Mhz processor, and originally shipped with 32MB RAM. Since you don't have a Windows ME CD (which probably was an upgrade to an existing license of Windows 95 or 98, depending on when the PC was purchased) I'd recommend downloading one of the popular linux distributions, such as Fedora Core (free Red Hat) or Open Suse (free Novell Suse), then use that distro to wipe the drive completely and install linux on the system.

No, I wouldn't install Windows ME again, or even XP. I'm thinking that this older computer wouldn't be able to take Windows XP. If you can, get yourself a copy of Windows 2000 and install that instead. The full version of Windows 2000 will cost you $175 though you won't pay that much more for XP, I'm not convinced that the older computer could handle XP, even if it meets the minimum, it wouldn't run it well. I think Windows 2000 is your best bet, http://www.royaldiscount.com/wi20pr.html?ovchn=bizrate&ovcpn=bizrate&ovcrn=Windows+2000+Pro+Full+Version+OEM&ovtac=PPC

It looks like you need to re-install the operating system (os). Since you don't have the CD, and a ME installatioin disk is probably hard to find (exept from other current users, garage sales, etc), your best option is to buy an XP upgrade disk from a retailer and install it on your pc. :)

if you can just go to walmart or a retail store and get a copy of Windows XP Home or Pro, its a lot better than Windows ME, Windows ME you can not do anything with, Windows XP is a whole lot better, Hope that this helps:-)
