There are several First United Metodist churches just in my town, and several First Baptist churchers. I see a lot of these churches in other cities. Why are they all First? Why isn't there a Second, or Third? There must be more than a thousand First.

I know of a Second Baptist Church, actually!
The "First" refers to the first in the area--and if you have a church split, those who leave may assert that the chuch they came from was not REALLY a United Methodist, or what have you, church. In this way, the splinter group can call themselves "First."

Very true, I would rather be in the last [whatever] church. If you are first, you won't be around to see everything happen in this world. However, like the last seat in the rollor coaster, you get to see it all! Weeeeeee.

They probably were the "First" church in their area at one time. Urban sprawl has merged most of the small communities together as one now.
