I have a pet dog, a Shih Tzu. He used to never leave my side. However, I decided to cut off all his hair for the summer time, and now he will not respond to me. He's been very grouchy and snaps more often. What is the matter with my Prince William?

Hehe Sorry but it sounds like your dear dog is really mad at you for giving him a summer hair cut. He feels naked and therefor humiliated and probably even a bit betrayed that you would dare do such a thing to him as cut off his lovely hair. Some dogs just don't like getting hair cuts and will respond in this manner letting you know just HOW they feel about your doing this to them. Other dogs don't care one bit and go about as usual.
Give him some time to accept that he's got shorter hair for now and he should come around. The only other suggestion is fixing him a really good meal, something he REALLY, REALLY loves a lot but doesn't get very often as a bribe in the hopes he will accept that as your apology for doing this to him.
*hugs*

Shih Tzu's can be temperamental. I have a Lhasa Apso and mine has to be shaven because the hair gets way to thick for the summer where I live. Don't feel bad about good grooming techniques. Sometimes when the dogs are shaven for the first time it may not be the hair loss it may be who and how they were groomed. With these two types of breeds they really do need professional good quality grooming. Lavish attention on your dog. Give him some treats and extra play time with you. This will assure him your not the bad person. If he snaps at you then correct this. You don't want your Prince William to think that its OK to be your master. Good Luck. P.S. I have to give my dog a sedative before he is shaven or I will end up with an upset Lhasa.

I keep my Tzu's hair short too. It is easier to keep up with. But I do leave her tail and ears long. The heat is so bad on the dogs. Sometimes mine will just look at me when I call her. They can be finicky little things. I just leave her be when she doesnt want to play or come. But when it is the last of the night potty call and she wont come I put her on the floor and push her towards the door. She finally starts moving. If Prince is still eating and drinking and voiding I wouldn't worry too much. Mine has never snapped at me so I'm not sure about that part.

OK Weezer, I will settle this once and for all. If you shaved your dog yourself several things could have happened. The blades get very hot very fast. They can get blade burn easy. You can also nick them and not even know it. Too, alot of times if a dog is not used to being groomed they are embarrassed. I am not kidding. With this breed, I leave the head and tail and give the body what I call a puppy cut, which leaves the hair long. It sounds like your dog was traumatized. Give him time. It is a good idea to have your dog groomed if you let the hair get in bad shape because they can acquire "hot spots" which are nasty sores. Good Luck...

I definitely agree with the Vet Tech, I work in a vet clinic myself. If this persists, take him to a vet to check for joint injuries. He could have hurt himself at the groomers and they may not have known. He could have also hurt himself jumping of a couch or stairs that he jumps off of all the time and just landed funny. It could be more serious than him just being "ticked at you" as all the these other people think. Just observe the dog and see if the dog becomes grouchy if it moves a certain way or if you touch the dog a certain way. Good Luck with the problem.

I wouldn't worry too much...my shih tzu can be very willful. Sometimes I'll call her and she will just look at me and then go back to whatever she was doing.
Regarding the sunburn comments: your dog would have to be almost completely shaved to risk a burn. A coat that is one to two inches long is more than enough to protect your puppy. Remember, shih tzu's are very sensitive to heat and it is not difficult for them to suffer a heat stroke. I keep my dog's coat at about the same length as yours and she appreciates not having all that insulation in the summer sun.

Some dogs do get weird for a week or two right after they're clipped - don't know why. Of course, his change in mood could be from an injury; if a dog is in pain, he may be grouchy and snappy. If you had him clipped at the groomer's, call and ask if they had any problems with him. (Of course, if they whacked him or dropped him off a table, they will lie and say no.) If it persists for more than a week, I'd take him to the vet for an exam to check for a joint injury or a broken rib.

It's quite possible that he is mad at you. Sunburn happens when bare skin is exposed to UV rays, not covered with shorter hair. He may have had a bad experience at the groomer and if you did it your self it would explain a lot. Don't worry he will come around once he has forgiven if this is the case. Another likely scenario would be that he may not be feeling well for whatever reason and just coincidentally happened at the same time. I would take him for a check up either way and tell the vet of his behavioral change and hair cut.

Would you want all your hair cut off, think about how you would feel not saying you a dog and all. but not all dogs like have their hair cut all off; you could have trimmed it. Shih Tzu will respond after time, have patience, but now you have a sign of what not to do anymore.
