If they're at work, they'll turn on their away message w/ something stupid like, "At work."

Shoot.. if you were really working, why would you intentionally invite potential distractions?

Cause they're being snobby. They're online so that they can see who is on the messenger service and then if they want to talk to them, then they'll be available to that person, but to everyone else, it's like "I'm here but Don't bother talking to me cause I'm busy"

If you can't talk, then don't be online.

Some people wait for a certain someone to come online, and do not want to just chat with whoever else may be online.

Cuz they want people that will normally talk to you to not talk to you as soon as you log on. And also if you want to talk to them, then YOU are the one that has the power to engage the conversation. There is always the other possibility of saying "i'm busy" in order to ignore someone you don't wanna talk to.

I do it although I tend to be invisible on yahoo, because I want to keep the ******* that once looked for me to talk about sexual things; to leave me alone. Now that I am in a relationship that I am happy with, no one needs to talk about that except me and my man. Sorry, to burst your bubbles. Hope that helps and Good Luck.

For the same reason people choose to screen their phone calls by letting voicemail answer. They want to pick and choose who and when they talk.
