basically all answers are correct, more or less. You're swallowing air, for sure, we all do. But too much is coming back up, due to a bad stomach/esophagus junction, at least most likely.

Smoking (all nictotine taken orally, yes gum too), alcohol, licorice, mint, caffeine reduce the competency of this junction.

Obesity increases the intra-abdominal fat content, and raises the pressure below the junction, tight cloths....

There may be a surgical situation, if new and "all the time". Hernias through the diaphragm can occur due to vomitting/coughing/trauma that first show up as burping. If chronically worsening, diseases such as achalasia chronically change the esophagus, complicated.

Would need a good doc for the diagnosis.

what the others have said along with the types of foods you eat also...i know carbonated beverages and certain types of alcohol can produce this too....havent you heard someone burp the abc's after a couple of beers? lol...but yes, indigestion, swallowing air, nervousness can cause burping...if you feel a burning or foul taste from burping, see a dr who can further evaluate you for other problems....good luck!..
