Practice with easy stuff that you can quickly remember.

For instance, if you want to be able to add numbers quickly, remember how to add numbers 1 through 9 to each other (ie 5 + 9 = 14; 2+8 = 10). Once you know these, try writing down double digit numbers and try to solve them in your head. You will already know how to do the ones column.

For instance:
45
+19
-------
64

Learn easy problems first then move on to hard ones. You can apply this to subtraction, division, and multiplication too. It really is just practice that will make you better.

everyone has a different method. some people just see numbers kind of like tetris blocks, and they fit together. other people just can't see it, no matter how hard they try. that's why calculators were invented in the first place.
me, I break numbers down into easy blocks. in my head, 5+8 isn't 5+8, it's 5+(5+3). because I know 5+5 is 10, and then the 3 is easy to add on. that might work for you, but it might not. if it doesn't, just use the calculator, and remember, Einstein flunked math :)
