The inner coil to the sub will be either cracke or bent you can see the coil from the surface it is the round loop like figure that surrounds the actual speaker. Aswell it will not go down if you use your hand and slightly press on it not depressing the tweater in the middle where the name of the make is written on. If you connect it, it will work but you will hear a distinct sound that sound like nails on a chalk board so to speak. But check it if it sound dark like they are mummbling then it is busted and if not then the sub is cool and ready for you to **** it up. Speed and sound SA

You can typically hear the voicecoil rubbing on the pole piece. Otherwise, you can try to lightly press down on the subwoofer and listen for a scraping sound. If you attempt to press down on the subwoofer, and it does not move at all, it typically means that the voicecoil is fused and the subwoofer is 'blown'.
The easiest thing to do (if you have access to one) is to run a tone generator through it and see if it responds. If it does not, it is busted.

If you push the woofer in and out and it doesn't move freely, the voicecoil is fried. The voice coil is nothing more than copper around a magnet but if the copper "fries", the woofer will not go in and out freeliy.

If it sounds retarded. If it vibrates and sounds like a dying bird.

test it with a 9 volt battery, or some type small battery, example a cordless drill battery. if the your woofer is blown it will make a poping noise when you put a bettery to it...this will also work when it is connected to a stereo listen for a poping noise!

it sounds like broken carton!
makes a weired noise when the bass is to high...
You can fix or change depends on what you want, must of the time by changing just the polyethylene cone you are done, otherwise replace the complete sub woofer...
