In order to talk about God, you have to conceptualize him. In order to relate to him, you have to conceive of him in anthropomorphic terms.
God is not a man, a being, or anything we can conceive. All our conceptions fall short of God.

No way. God is an ominpresent, eternal energy form and is genderless. God can take any form God wishes, but is neither a he nor a she. God the Father was created by a patriarchal society by humans. Some religions (ie: Gnostics) believe in both a Mother and Father God. The Mother God goes by many different names including Azna, Isis, Sedna, Mary, Stella Maris, Inti, Zuni, Anat, Kali and the list goes on. Mother God has been recognized and worshipped for millenia. If we were made in the likeness and image of God, and the human race (as well as animals) come in both male and female form (not to mention different races, creeds, colours etc.) does it not make sense that there are both male and female aspects to God? Having said that, I in no way believe that God can be limited to mere human traits and is far beyond the limited comprehension of humans. All we really need to know is that God is LOVE! And this is what we too should strive for.

If you go by the Holy Trinity, then god would be male. But the whole concept of god being gender specific is a bunch of bunk. Every religion believes their god is the rightful one.
The idea of god cannot be proven unless you rely on pure faith. Which makes religion what it is. Control of the masses....pure and simple. There is no logic to the idea of god but being the simple creatures that mankind is, the idea of god seems to offer us some kind of solace.

I always assumed people thought god to be male because it says somewhere in the bible that god created man after himself. Since Adam was the first person and male. You'd assume god to look/be male. Personally I think god is female, but that's me.

"Him" isn't gender specific when talking about God. This word used out of respect, dignity and high status.
JackBauer :) It would be totally inappropriate to use the word "it" if God exists and would not convey the proper understanding of God being who He is; Alive, Compassionate, Forgiving, Patient, Loving, etc.

God is either a supernatural entity beyond any description or a member of an eighties hair band.

They refer to God in Genesis walking with Adam and Eve in the Bible. Perhaps God does have some human-like qualities(afterall, we are supposedly fashioned after him/her/it). It wouldn't be impossible. It depends upon faith (as my philosophy instructor so eloquently puts it). What you believe. I believe God would be Nietzsche's personification of the ubermensch (superhuman).
