Jack Russell's are very active dogs that require a tremendous amount of dedication. If you have the time and dedication, you cannot ask for a better dog - I've had two of them and swear by them. Fantastic, intelligent and EASY to train. But, they will test your consistency. Think of them as a human stuck in a dogs body :)

When possible you should always try to rescue a dog from the pound, you're probably saving it's life. The majority of dogs that end up at the pound have been abused in some way and just want someone to really, really love them and take care of them. I don't trust pet stores unless I know the owner's personally. Vets will tell you which pet stores are notorious for having sick dogs for sale as they get to treat them.

I would definitly try the pound first. Some animal refuge leagues will give you a dog for a few days, just to try it out, with out a comitment....It's worth a try.
Jack Russells are very hyper and noisy, but very cute.
My friend had one that was deaf, but learned all kinds of hand signals, so they are pretty smart too!

They are extremely bright, inquisitive and very difficult to train if you're not very experienced and up to the challenge. They will dig and bark all day if left outside where they can see the world passing by. They will dash around an apartment, jumping on and off the furniture, until you and your downstairs neighbors are insane. They will play tug-of-war with your kid's clothes and steal anything just to get you to chase them. They will also torment your cat and kill your kid's hamsters. Hell of a lot of fun or frustration - take your pick! I love and own terriers, but I've never recommened a JR to someone else. An awful lot of them end up in the shelters.

They are very hyper dogs & need lots of attention & stimulation. Do you have that kind of time? Do you have a place to let him run & play a couple hours per day? If so, get one. But get it at the pound. There are a lot of JRT or JRT mixes there & it will be UTD on shots, socialized, fixed & VERY greatful!
