Clinical depression is a state of sadness, melancholia or despair that has advanced to the point of being disruptive to an individual's social functioning and/or activities of daily living. Although a low mood or state of dejection that does not affect functioning is often referred to as depression, clinical depression is a medical diagnosis and is different from the everyday meaning of "being depressed".
Stress (roughly the opposite of relaxation) is a medical term for a wide range of strong external stimuli, both physiological and psychological, which can cause a physiological response called the general adaptation syndrome, first described in 1936 by Hans Selye in the journal Nature.

Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain which may or not be brought on by stress. Depression is an extended period of worthlessness, sadness, and feelings of guilt that last for atleast two weeks or more. Depression can run in families.
Stress is the everyday anxiety that people face in life. Everyone is stressed at one point or another but depression is not experienced by everyone.

Stress is one of the many causes of depression. I think everybody stresses out I hate to see those commercials that ask if you are stressed. Everybody stresses out if we didnt then we might not take things seriously. And some things need to be taken that way!

Clinically, if you feel depressed for more than 2 weeks straight, psychology professional suggest you may be clinically depressed and may need help.
The first thing you should do is change your diet. Less high fat, high sugar foods, more proteins, unrefined carbs, fruits and vegetables. Drink lots of water. Dehydration can lead to depression and lack of energy. Get 8 hours of sleep a night. Exercise regularly.

stress is somthing you feel for a short while due to an event or upcomming event.
depression is something that lasts much longer and is not directly related to a singleevent or events. depression requires treatment with medicine, and stress (unless you really need it on rare occasions) doe not need to be medicated
