Is your cousin an only child? Do the parents interact with the child? My experience is that if they interact with other children that are older they with talk sooner. Reading to a child also helps with speech. And by the way dont listen to jennifer!!

By age 2 1/2, the average child has a vocabulary of about 600 words, by age 5 or 6 that number rises to about 15,000 words, an increase of 10 words a day. By 3 years of age, most children have all the basic tools needed to form sentences and make conversation. Most 18 to 20 month olds will use 1 and 2 word sentences. By 24 months, the longest sentences include 4 and 5 words. By 30 months, sentence length will double again. If you have concerns, take her to the doctor just to make sure she doesn't have hearing troubles.

Things sound as if they might be on the slow to normal scale for your cousin, although not yet 3 is real early to be making descisions. Does she pronounce well the words she DOES use? Is there perhaps an older sibling who is speaking for her, making her more silent or her language skills not as refined as they could be? Does she hear well? Is her environment such that she is encouraged to use more words than she is ? Is she read to? Does she like to follow along when she IS read to? All these stimuli encourage word memory and usage. If all is as it should be, then please, speak with someone in your family and see if the baby could be tested. The earlier any problems are spotted, the easier they can be dealt with!

It all depends from baby to baby. My son didn't start talking in full sentences untill he was about 3 although he could say lots of words it was just getting them together that he had a problem with. He is now almost 4 and sometimes won't shut up! LOL I'm sure she is just fine. Give her a little bit more time to learn. If you are really concerned about it you could have her ears checked to make sure she is hearing correct.

most child talk in proper sentances by the age of three but every child develops at different rates so dont worrie you said that she is talking so it not that she cant talk you should just keep talking to her and try to encourge her to talk back.

If I was the mother of that child I would IMMEDIATELY take her in for testing. She might have several issues delaying her speech! Do it NOW before it's too late!
