when i open word 2003 the file dropdown box shows file names i want to delete but when i click on them they open and take up the entire screen. also in the lower right hand corner of word 2003 there is a category called open which also lists some of the same files or folders i want to delete. how do i delete these items?

That list is your most recently used documents list and can't be edited easily. You can't do anything with those names except to open them by clicking on them. If you wanted to remove them, you'd have to find them on your computer via Explorer or Search and delete them that way. As for getting rid of them on your list, your best bet is to open some other files - the ones you don't want will automatically drop off as you open more Word documents.

If you don't want that list to populate at all, you can always go to Tools-Options, then click on the General tab and uncheck the box next to Recently used file list (or you can simply reduce the number of files shown in your list).
