Liberals think social security is important because it protects people who have been unable to save money for their old age from facing poverty. (It also saves liberals and conservatives alike from paying the societal costs of a large segment of our population living in poverty -- think: increased crime, increased illness and associated health care costs, etc.)

What kind of moronic premise is that?
Social security is designed to provide needy persons, esp the elderly, with a subsistance fund to live on.
I suppose your answer is: "Are there no prisons? Are there no work houses?"

Umm, maybe because everyone is forced to pay into it and the majority of people aren't going to get a penny out of it? Could that have something to do with it? Sounds a bit like a scam doesn't it?
