GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES BECAUSE IF YOU ARE HELPING OTHERS NOT FOR YOURSELF BUT FOR GODS WILL THAT IS APPROPRIATE... IF YOU ARE JUST TRYING TO HELP OTHERS BUT ARE BOASTFUL ABOUT IT THAT ISNT RIGHT IN GODS EYES... HELPING OURSELVES UM I AM NOT TOTALLY SURE WHAT YOU ARE GETTING AT BUT HELPING OURSELVES TO READING GODS WORD THAT IS APPROPRIATE BUT TO HELPING OURSELVES TO GET WHAT WE WANT ALL THE TIME ISNT WHAT IS NEEDED ... WHAT I MEAN IS YOU CAN NOT BE SPOILED INTO GETTING YOUR WAY ALL THE TIME... GOD DOES LOVE YOU THOUGH... BUT I KNOW PEOPLE PRAY FOR THING ALL THE TIME AND IF THEY DONT GET IT THEY BLAME GOD FOR IT .. IT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN SOMETHING THAT GOD THINKS THAT YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE JUST YET... ITS NOT OUR TIMING BUT ITS GODS TIMING... OK I WANTED TO HAVE CHILDREN LIKE OH MAN LIKE 4 AND A HALF YEARS AGO... BUT I DIDNT GET TO HAVE MY DAUGHTER UNTIL LAST YEAR... IT WASNT MY TIME TO HAVE A CHILD YET...

There is no God. People are afraid of the end of their existence and so they've devised fantastical stories with a creator(s) and an afterlife or rebirth. This also makes it easier to credit a god or blame a devil when they come across something they do not understand, rather than admit they are ignorant. As a species, we simply aren't evolved or advanced enough to understand everything, but science has already shown that most of these religious theories are highly unlikely (if not impossible) to be real. We are a part of nature and will be recycled back into the world just as all matter and energy is. We are not above animals...we ARE animals. Wake up, people!

I am not exactly sure what you mean by appropriate or exactly what your question is. If you mean important or Biblically correct, this may help you. "God helps those who help themselves", is an old cliche and is not Biblical at all.* Jesus said "You must love others as much as yourself" (The Living Bible~Mark Chp. 12 vs. 31) Also in Matthew 7:31,"Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. In Mark 6:31, "And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. Phrased another way, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", more commonly known as The Golden Rule. This command is 2nd only to "Thou shalt have no other gods before me".
If you're asking which will God reward the most or who will He help the most based on whether a person spends more time helping themselves or others, I think Jesus made that clear. Explore the New Testament. I'm SURE you'll find help beyond your imagination!

Because God is everyone and everything. You help God by helping yourself and you also help God by helping others. People can tap into the powers of God simply by action. So, each is appropriate and realistic. However most people forget about themselves in the rush to help out family.

Without a doubt, I believe your question has validity. But with that said, it will be necessary to check into my archives of linguist thoughts on this particular subject matter, to ascertain as to the best and most beneficial response scheme possible. Although the question has some important thoughts and validity, I would advise you to seek a professional who can best serve you, since most of the people, who answer questions are good at cutting and pasting, spreading descent, and peddling gloom. Although I will do my best to be forthright in giving you the best answer possible, I am afraid anything that I write would be taken entirely out of context. For this reason, and this reason alone, I will say there are always good answers; but rarely are there perfect answers. So my answer can not and will not serve your needs for anything medical or evangelical. I will only answer by saying this is my best sentiment for which I have actually put my best foot forward to be able to reach a solution to your question that is embedded with perplexing thoughts; it in no way reflects my moral values or any opinion of my business, that will remain incognito.

The quote in the question is wrong. It is a quote from Greek mythology: "The gods help those that help themselves". It is repeated many times in the story of Hercules (not the cartoon). However, Jesus not only instructed us to help others, but to love them (even if they are your enimies), and even to die for them if need be. God loves all equally, but doesn't always like the things we do. That is why we can ask forgiveness, and can be forgiven of anything, as long as we are truly penitent and don't do it again. We are supposed to try to follow that example as it was set down by Jesus.

Both are true. I can't give you ten dollars if i don't have a job. I must also sometimes bare a friends burden too so. In some cases you must help your self before you will be able to help others. If not you will be a burden to others. God also help those who help others. you cant see a man dying of hunger at your door step and close the door then one day you lose your job and you need a blessing, so you turn to God and say, lord lord, please help me. sometimes God rewards you according to the works you have done for others.

Jesus said " what ever you do to the least of them , you do to me" if you treat a person poorly you are hurting Him but if you help someone you are doing good to Him .
Faith without works is empty, If you do nothing to help others in need are you showing love? Jesus was and is all about love.
At the same time we need to know our limits sometimes we just have to say no about helping someone simply because we do not have the ability to help them. God understands that. If He wants you to help them He will give you the tools to do so.
If you look at the long term by helping others you are helping yourself . Don't forget your reward is in Heaven waiting for you.

I'm not the most religious person, but (i) seems more realistic to me. In today's society, more people are willing to help themselves rather than others. What's mre appropriate is (ii), because helping others can sometimes help yourself become a better person. Hope that helps you!

I wish to ask all of the people who've replied thus far in which part of the 66 books (if Protestant) or 73 books (if Catholic) is that written. While the principle does indeed hold true to most of miracles in the Bible it os written nowhere explicity. There are some miracles that cayaully required the faith of someone else and not in fact the person who needed the miracle. There is balance.

God helps everyone.
As for the second part of the question..doesn't it depend on the circumstances?
For example: If you are at a business party and are speaking to a potential client and someone nearby starts to choke, what is more appropriate...to help yourself and follow thru with your discussion or stop and help the person choking to death?
