Funny you ask. This happened to me last night. I was just closing the door on my vehicle and taking the long journey to the convenience store's door, when to my amazement a women looking at me was holding the door open for me. As I sped up to take her polite gesture, I was less than 10 feet away she then let go of the door and it closed it on me. To answer your question it is proper etiquette to make this gesture. however: if you do this follow through with.

No, they don't annoy me. How can someone being nice and helpful annoy you? They see how far away you are, and still choose to wait for you and to hold the door. Be thankful there are still people like that living in this world. And we should all try to be more like them.

If someone makes an effort to be polite or helpful, I am appreciative. I wish more people would take the time to hold doors for others, hold the elevator, excuse themselves when trying to get by, etc. It's the "little things" like common courtesy that seem to be lacking these days.

Nobody is forcing you to hurry. You are annoying yourself because you think that you have to hurry because someone is holding a door. People who hold doors for you aren't in a hurry and won't care if you don't change your pace. They are just being polite and don't want to let the door shut in your face as you are approaching. What annoys me is when people are out right rude. Otherwise I don't care what they do.

when I hold the door open, some times a person will rush and other times they dont. it's up to them. I'm not holding the door to say Hurry up, lets go. I'm just being polite. if they rush, I know they are trying to be polite back so they are not holding me up.

YES! Too funny. I feel obligated to move faster than I may wish to.

Let this be a warning to premature holders: Stop it! Use the 6-step rule. If it will take more than 6 steps for the approacher to reach you, move along. Unless they're carrying a heavy load, in which case you should use the 10-step rule.

I for one am going to take this opportunity to make a new year's resolution: Never again will I hasten my steps for a PH. I will make them regret their poor depth perception!

I am on crutches and they ALWAYS open the door for me. Even if they have to knock me down to do it. I used to HATE it but I have gotten used to it.
One time I was wainting in front of a store to meet someone and a guy came up and said "Are you waiting for someone to open this door?" I about died. I said "Oh my thank you I could have been here all day, Hey, can you come with me to the bank and gas station next?" I winked at him, he figured it out.

No, it is by their kindness that they open the door for me and I appreciate that. Also if I choose, I will continue at my current pace and if they wish to leave, they can do so.

Why force a fake smile and say false thanks? Are you that shallow and phony? If their courtesy annoys you, tell 'em so!
