Try this ....
When you put your son in his crib or bed (you didn't state his age ... so i'm assuming an age) you can put your hand on his stomach or back and you gently rub him. You can do this in a slight rocking motion with your hand. I have even found that doing gentle strokes in their hair work too. It's soothing to them especially when you have on some quiet lullabies for him to drift off to sleep with.

To me that's impossible to get your son asleep alone. Babies want to feel protect while they take their you holding does that. The only way a baby would fall asleep on their own is when they are tired and you put them in their crib.

That's a bad habit to get into; kids need to learn how to fall asleep on their own. It will probably be tough at first, but stand firm and he may over come it quicker than you think.

Being a mother a three young children myself I have had to learn to not coddle the children. When he sees that his tantrums will no longer work and you are being firm in telling him that he must do this on his own he will catch on quickly, but you have to be firm and not let his crying or tantrum sway you from your course.

get a bedtime routine where you will hold him and rock him while you read him a story and then put him in his bed, kiss him good-night and then leave. once you get a routine and he knows what comes next and understands that bedtime is time to be in bed then you won't have anymore problems.
