Unfortunately, this is not a job you can apply for and be hired. All it takes to be a novel writer is to actually write something. The trick is to get someone to like it enough to invest their stockholders' money in marketing it to other people.
There are a lot of suggested ways you can go about this, but because the process is so frustrating there are a lot of frauds out there who can't wait to take our money from us. Unfortunately, right now, it seems the way you can tell if a publisher or agent is dishonest is if they show any interest in your work, and then want money from you. There are all sorts of self-publishers and prepaid agents lurking on the internet just waiting for you to get fed up with being ignored, to the point that we think it is almost worth several hundred dollars just to have someone say nice things to us until the check clears.
I currently have two novels out hopefully being looked at (though probably they will return unopened with a form letter again). I am not at the point yet where I want to self-publish, although lulu.com seems to be more reputable than many others.
Good luck to both of us!

Take some writing courses at a Community College. From here discover if you really want to be a novelist. You are also going to need to determine what sort of novels you want to write. If you are just going to write popular fiction then all you need is your imagination, time and patience and persistance. Start small by writing short stories once you have worked up to a novel find an agent who will try to find a publisher. If you want to do contemporary fiction I would suggest taking courses at a university.

good idea but change your name to Danielle Steele or something.
Are you going to school? You need to learn structure and there is more to it than appears. Also have you explored poetry? Maybe that would be a start if it inspires you. Good luck. Write something Bette than the The Bell Jar though, personal bias, please excuse. Follow your bliss, writers always know they are writers, whether good or not one never knows though but I think all writing is worthwhile. So never give up. Emily Dickinson was ignored until after she died, now she is famous.

First, write a novel, and second find a publisher. If the publisher likes your material, he'll print your book. It can cost a pretty penny or two but if your novel is good enough it will pay for itself.

There's also some good books out there. You're local library can be a good source.

I see, and the question you should ask is , will i be a famous star daydreamer, gazing at the bright, diamond, stars in the infinite night sky? My answer: only if you let me take you by both hands and embrace my stature.
