I recently took a job working as an instructor at a school for adults who have autism and/or mental retardation. They offer the vaccine for free and recommend getting it, but I'm concerned about side effects. Has anyone had an adverse reaction?

I would recommend that you take the series. I don't know of any serious side effects. However, be aware that just because you take the series doesn't mean you will be protected. Your antiboties have to reach a certain level before you're fully protected and about 5% of the population will never reach that level. You will have blood drawn to see what your level is (a blood titer test) after you have taken the full series. In your line of work, I would definitely take the series. Hep-B is deadly and can be spread in institutions very easily. Protect yourself.

The only contra-indication is if you currently have a SEVERE FEBRILE illness - and then it is simply deferred until you are well. Otherwise it is perfectly safe, and unquestionably an excellent idea.

Your immunity will be adequate (if you respond to the vaccines) about 6 weeks from your first injection.

Dont forget, vaccines protect your loved ones and those you come into contact with, not just yourself (by preventing you from being ill and passing it on).

The risk is extremely low. Most people get a sore arm for about a day.
