First. don't drive if you can. Parking is very hard and expensive, and traffic is frustrating. Public transportation is not that great, the metro (subway) much better than buses. Pick one area to go to each day, however you get there, and walk around there. Also, try and plan to eat breakfast and pack one meal because eating out is very expensive. One must area is the Mall, where you'll find all the Smithsonian museums and all the monuments. It's grand. One other destination for tourists is Georgetown, the beat of tourist DC. The University itself is quite beautiful and a short walk from commercial Georgetown. So is the Washington Waterfront. Just ask people when you're in Georgetown to tell you how to get there. A third trip should be to the Zoo. It is also free and really nice, clean, sparse, hilly, with gorgeous greenery. From the Zoo, you should walk to Adams Morgan, the ethnic neighborhood of DC, Latino, African, everything, stores, restaurants, funky street life. Dupont Circle is also near by the zoo and Adams morgan and is like Georgetown in that it has stores and restaurants, but it is mostly gay friendly, has less tourists too. I don't think the White House is worth the grueling wait line. The Capitol is important, a symbol of democracy, and the geographical center of DC. From it, you start the East, West, North and South directions of the streets. Mostly everything is in NW DC. Other neighborhoods are not as safe. The Georgetown Flea Market on upper Wisconsin Avenue but still in Georgetown (Wisconsin goes as far north as Md) is great if you like flea markets. I'll stop here, lol!!!

Sounds like a good time to go. It won't be too hot. Everyone should bring a couple of pairs of comfortable shoes. You have to walk a lot to see everything! And there is so much to see.
