Some of my friends do. Why? It's not like they're worshiping the devel or something. And what about other fantasy books? Hmmm?

It is interesting that some groups boycott Harry Potter because it involves magic. However, funnily enough they don't say anything about other media with the same or similar themes in them. Harry Potter is very popular which gives them something to rally around.

How come you've never heard boycotts over:

Mary Poppins and her magic umbrella
The Little Mermaid - Ursula the Sea Witch helps Ariel get out of her fins
Cinderella - Fairy Godmother
Sleeping Beauty - THREE Fairy Godmothers
Aladdin - The Wish Granting Genie
Beauty & the Beast - The Beast's castle is under an enchanted spell
Fantasia - Mickey is the Sorcerers Apprentice
The Wizard of Oz - The Wicked Witches of the East & West, Glinda the Good Witch

just to name a few...

Mostly it is done because the books/movies promote witchcraft( and the bible says you aren't to have anything to do with witchcraft because it is of satan) -- It is a person's choice to boycott or not, usually it just encourages people to go and see what all the fuss is about --- I look for novels, movies that give you both sides ( good and evil) --- I prefer things that teach a lesson or moral --- so often in movies there is so much pointing to glorifying violence, sex, excessive obscenities, witchcraft or drugs very little reflecting how these things harm or ruin lives. If I don't approve of a movie - I won't watch it and if I'm in a movie theater and the movie I'm watching isn't good or it was misrepresented - I just get up and leave --- you don't have to watch junk! The last movie that disgusted me was "Open Water".... very poorly done (my opinion) and it lacked professionalism.

Fantasy books may be one thing, but in the Harry Potter series, the entire premise is that he practices witchcraft. The Bible condemns spiritism and warns us to keep free from everything connected with it.(Galatians 5: 19-21) Tarot cards, crystal gazing, palmistry, astrology, dream interpretation...all these are forms of divination God warns us about! It isn't that so many see Harry Potter as bad, just that his whole reason for being involves sorcery and witchcraft and spiritism, and God DOES see that as bad! As an afterthought here, remember that Satan himself keeps transforming himself into an angel of light ( Cor 11:14) While something may LOOK good and fun and innocent, it could actually be evil or harmful or seductive. Satan WANTS the intergration into sin to be easy and good and simple. If all sin looked bad, like war and murder and abuse, then Satan's job would be harder, would it not? So he makes sure the slide you might take into sin is an easy ride that looks fun while you're doing it! That's just how easy Satan can get you...something that looks as innocent as Harry Potter and his sorcery.

They boycott Harry Potter because it advocates wizardry and witchcraft. Now, if you think back a few centuries, you might remember Christians were the ones who started witch-hunts. Witches are said to be the servants of the devil, so you can understand why they don't like magic and spells.

I dont' think any Christian that wants to boycott the books have actually read the books. If they had they would realize the books point is one of friendship and adolescent struggles. It is telling a story of a boy who overcomes losing his parents, his godfather and being completely rejected by his extended family. There are many children who could use this book as a positive healing tool.

Because they are not well-educated enough to understand the implications of Harry Potter. JK Rowling is a Christian, and she has woven a lot of intricate Christian themes into her books. Most Christians who oppose HP only do so because someone told them they should, and not because they read the books and made an educated decision. You should make a copy of the website below, and show it to your Christian friends, to show them what they are missing when it comes to really understanding the message of Harry Potter.

1.Unlike other fantasy children's stories that contain witches and the like, such as C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter does not have a positive biblical worldview.
2.The Bible clearly condemns all kinds of witchcraft, sorcery and spiritism (Deuteronomy 18:10-11). Philippians 4:8 tells us to "fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable."

They believe that Harry Potter speaks of, and therefore encourages, witchcraft and other practices that could steer impressionable people away from what they believe is the truth! They also believe that witchcraft is a satanic thing (which incidentally is incorrect) and is attempting to alter the course of righteousness that God intends.

Because they can't differentiate fantasy from reality. They don't understand that fiction is fiction. And if the world of Harry Potter did exist, then wouldn't their god have had to create it, too? So why do they hate it? Obsession is a crazy thing...

They feel it's an influence that leads to participation in real witchcraft. Personally, I think it's like the fairy tales of our childhood. Even taking place in a make believe world.
Unlike other stories about witchcraft that take place in our world
