Attach the earth cable of the welding machine to the ship's hull, and attach the job you are welding also to the ship's hull. The current will flow through the steel structure of the hull.

That is a good question. If your welding current passes through a ball beaing on the way to ground, etc., you might "weld" the bearing. Also, many large ships use a floating ground system that you must understand. Good luck.

Water is a superconductor , try welding while standing in a puddle of water and I believe you will get the picture.
