Have tried foot powders and baking soda and they don't really work. Putting the shoes through the laundry only works temporarily, and I isn't really good for them anyway.

Ensure that you wear stockings with your running shoes, air the shoes properly where the sun would dry it properly. do not store your running shoes with others . Leave it permanently in an airy place. Ensure that your your shoes are kept clean always. The key is to keep it dry and clean. Wash only when it is dirty.

I would just toss them and get new ones. The smell is probably from bacteria growing in the shoes and the only way to get rid of the bacteria is to toss them and start new. However, if the smell is from some sort of foot fungus you are going to need to treat your feet first or the new shoes are going to start to smell too.

Baby Power works great.
Wear white socks if feet are going to be sweaty.
MY Ex Army co-worker put on white socks , then
the socks of color on top of them. He always wore
two pair of socks.

Wash them, wash your feet before wearing them and always wear socks.
