If I am wrong and god does exist (which is unlikely) I can look him in the eyes and say I have tried to examine and understand the universe the best I could and I couldn't see you in it." But now what if I'm right there is no supreme being for us to be afraid of offending no one can be accused of playing god because he doesn't exist so science is free to advance without hindrance and that will expanded our knowledge of the universe and save billions of lives as we develop new effective cures for diseases and improve billions of others as new technology is developed . Also there wouldn't be as much discrimination or war as religion is the main cause of that. Oh what a wonderful world it would be. So there you go that is what happens if I am wrong and what happens if I'm right and personally I think it's worth the gamble (not much of a gamble as there is no evidence to suggest god does exist so that would mean I am right just the sooner you theists admit it the better for everyone).

Pascal's wager is invalid for various reasons, such as:

1: If a god exists who is malicious (not that far-fetched given the amount of suffering in the world) then he might decide to spare atheists and consign believers to the Fiery Furnace just for the sadistic pleasure of it;

2: If someone chooses to believe in the Christian god and it turns out that actually some other god exists, then the believer could be toast, and once again the atheist spared (because worshipping the wrong god may be a greater offence than worshipping no god at all);

3: If a god exists who values humans' god-given reason over blind faith then, given that he provides us with no justifiable reason to believe in his existence, he may choose to reward atheists for their rational worldview and punish believers for failing to use the faculties that he bestowed upon them.

... and so on.

Realistically though, you're right - Religion is simply nonsense, and dangerous nonsense at that. The sooner it's eradicated the better.

Addendum: AVI echoes the oft-stated viewpoint that "You can't prove a negative" and "you'd have to look everywhere in the universe to prove that god doesn't exist" etc... But this is not necessarily the case. Quantum Mechanics suggests that existence itself is probabilistic (which is why QM predicts the existence of the 'quantum vacuum', a seething foam of fundamental particles coming into existence and usually annihilating each other again, a concept which apparently receives tentative experimental confirmation in the Casimir Effect). If QM is correct then it may be the case that a state of 'nothing existing' is simply not a possible state for the universe to be in, and if there can't be a state of complete non-existence then there cannot logically be an act of creation to bring about existence... and if there cannot possibly be an act of creation, then there cannot be a creator.

I just took a bunch of college classes on science, meteorology, and biology. Did you know that if the earth wasn't suspended right exactly where it is in space and it was any closer to the moon we would freeze and any closer to the sun we would all burn up? I really respect people that can believe science cause some stupid teacher told you it was truth, so you believe it because it makes sence. I asked my philosphy teacher something, he was an aithiest. I asked him, wouldn't it take more faith to believe that things just sorta happend the way they did and that EVERYTHING has just somehow evolved? I am not sure what has happened in your life to doubt that God exists, but if we let these scientific advances occurr, we would just die alot faster. Study cloning, I am all for stem cell research, which most religions are against, but when we mess with RNA and DNA and we try to augementate what is natural just cause we can, science will learn its consicuences. I think it is so awesome that they can use pigs hearts to save humans lives, but lets say they tried to manipulate the procedure and that caused a mutation, what if that got into the gene pool and caused a MAJOR conflict, look at mad cow disease? If there isn't a God people would be killing themselves off alot faster then they are today. It's God's grace that keeps the order that we do have on earth. What is it that makes it hard for you to belileve in a creator/God? Just wondering, I use to not believe so I can relate that it seems like a fairy tale, but look at how life is, and where things are headed. Its all in the bible and even Nasterdomis, whom was big into science, all his prophecies have occured? That is nuts...there is tons of proof out there that God exists, whether we want to look at it or look away. Email me, I would like to know your thoughts...

Have you any idea how many scientist believe in God and do not feel hindered by Him. Doing things to save the world is not against God, and He is not against working towards that end. But to think that you can not be intelligent or scientific and believe in God is absurd. You have it backwards-You think that the world is so complex that some god couldn't possibly have created even a small part of this. But God is all powerful- the greatest minds that ever existed can not even fathom the smallest part of His creation. You can not possibly understand God or how He did anything. Read some books by scientist who do not believe in evolution, and see if they can at least change your mind. You don't have to get the ones who believe in God, just the ones who question the popular theories about origins.
Just give yourself half a chance.

Nice idea, but I don't think Hell (if that is what people think you should be afraid of) works like that. If you don't accept God's love, he won't force it on you, your spirit will just continue to exist without it. Which to a lot of people would feel like eternal hellfire et cetera.
As for the world without religion thing, I am Christian but readily accept the theory of evolution and generally accepted scientific truths, I just believe that God caused them all.

Oh, and I have a question for you. You say that you can't see God in the universe. (I won't go into the idea that even if you did, you would be likely to explain it away) but think about it like this.
Imagine all the knowledge in the universe. That includes stuff that humans know, and stuff they couldn't possibly know.
How much of that do you, and can you possibly hope to, have? Well, in all the stuff that is left (I'm assuming that will be a large amount) do you agree that there is potential for God to exist within that?

I think the "Star Trek" utopia you refer to will simply never work, mostly because it has never worked in the past as technology has developed.

People are different. Cultures are different. Conflict occurs not because people want to be destructive as a whole (although some do); it occurs mostly because people are different and come from different backgrounds, don't understand each other, and view the other side as a threat or as wrong or simply not as good as their own point of view.

(Why is marriage difficult for many people, for example? Because you're forcing two people with different perspectives and different PERCEPTIONS to interact positively with each other all the time. Marriages end in divorce because of the differences and our inability to understand and cope with them.)

The only way to eradicate this sort of conflict is to eradicate diversity -- which means you've got robots, not people, in your society. That's not an acceptable answer. We want living, breathing, free-willed people who have unique things to contribute, not a bunch of cookie-cutter carbon copies.

In addition, the problem with technology is that human beings control it. Yes, it can make our lives better... but how traditionally has technology been used and developed? Quite often as a weapon against others. (How much of our current tech, including the Internet to some degree, occurred as a byproduct of research by the U.S. Department of Defense, for example?)

To sum this up, people are different and have different perspectives. This results in differing religious beliefs as well. Religion doesn't actually CAUSE conflict, both conflict and religion are the results in the differences between people and cultures, and religion can be used as a weapon by those who are already conflict-minded.

Our only hope is to change the inner attitude. We must learn how to live with and respect each, value each other as worthwhile despite the differences -- and ironically this is the very domain of religion, not technology.

That's my story, and I'm sticking with it... :)

btw, while I disagree with "salvation by technology," I do agree with your goal (peace and the ideal world where everyone can get along), as well as the honesty you showed in your question. I hope that came across.

The presence of the Biblical God is often not evident to the untrained eye.

We humans like to label things, to wrap our minds around a concept, to define and package it, in essence to limit it so that the concept finds harmony within our human definition of logic.

To experience a force field, hold a heavy object out at arms length. Feel the downward pull. But what is doing the pulling? Gravity. But what produces gravity? Gravitons of course. But what are gravitons? For that question there is no answer. Where are the strings that tug down toward the earth? They are there, but other than the pull, they are not totally imperceptible. We call that force gravity without knowing what it really is.

Everybody knows magnets attract iron. But How? What reaches out from the magnet, beckoning the iron to come hither? It's a lesson in the magic of our universe. Take two horseshoe magnets. Try to push north onto north and south onto south. Look closely at the space between the opposing poles. Nothing is seen, but the force is mightily felt as the poles constantly slip aside, avoiding one another.

Both the magnetic and the and the electrostatic forces are theoretically carried by a single type of entity, photons, totally invisible and massless, observed only in their effects, as iron is drawn to a magnet and lint to wool. But what actually produces the photon in the magnet that reaches out to the iron, or in the nucleus of an atom that sends it hurtling off toward the orbiting cloud of electrons? And what is energy in the first place? We talk of energy so often that we've convinced ourselves it is a real and tangible entity.
Energy is only a convenient concept for quantifying observed effects. We can't handle a piece of energy.

Our universe had a beginning; there was a time before which there was neither time nor space nor matter.
Whatever brought the universe into existence must of course predate the universe, which in turn means that whatever brought the universe into existence must predate time. That which predates time is not bound by time. Not inside of time. In other words, it is eternal.

Both science and religion acting alone have produced irrational and horrific behavior. Like rain in the growth of a tree, the blessing of insight from above must mesh with the roots of material reality from below. Neither by itself can achieve the goal of peace on earth and goodwill toward all.

We are viewing creation from the inside, looking out. Just think if we could view creation from the outside, looking in !

Newton himself said, there is enough mystery left to be explained in the physical world that one could imagine God being active in almost every event.

The universe we have discovered behaves in a manner most illogical. It does not comply with human reason.

Discrimination is man made, not brought about by God.
War, even in the name of religion, is man made. Not brought on by God.
God does not get offended. People get offended.
It does not really matter if you believe in God or not.
If there is a God, He will deal with you, the spiritual you not the physical you of this earth, in a loving and compassionate way. Not the hell, fire and torture way tv evangelist preach. Also, if there is a God and after your death you are in His presence at this point don't you now know God exists? At that very moment are you not a believer?
If God does not exist, then when you die, darkness, nada, nothing, you are done. There is nothing else. No more. No worries.

"And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not, for I [Jesus, Jehovah-Saviour] came not to judge the world, but to save the world'

Very tastefully done, my friend.

Except for the very last comment about theists, you did a damn fine job of stating your opinion without pushing it onto others. Very rare to find that. If only people of ALL religions could be like that and respect other peoples beliefs without judging or trying to convert.

Have a great day.

BTW, hey DUMPFINDS, you need to check your history and do better research. Throughout history, more people have died in the name religion, more wars have been fought over it and more women and children have been violated and killed for the sake of religion. This is a FACT.

No, my heart is saddened at the hardness of you and wars are never caused by religion, but by greed, but then you would have to believe God to believe that and since you don't - I'm surprised you believe in Science since you don't believe in God, since it is the original science book of telling when to plant crops, when to reap, giving the astrological alignments, etc. And you will stand before God, but I doubt you look him in the eyes. But at least with your saving billions of lives you could shut up all the people who are worried about global warming and ozone threats and a lack of earth's resources.

I understand your thoughts and they are all valid. However, I read a book recently by a journalist that investigates the scientific root for our earth and for a creator, which I found quite interesting. It really gave me an entirely new perspective and answered a lot of my questions. The book is called "The Case for a Creator" by Lee Strobel. If you get a chance, read it, it will give you a lot more things to ponder.
