I have recently acquired a 1986 Mustang that carsearch.com has 16 reports on. Is there a way to get this information elsewhere that is not so expensive?

www.carfax.com is going to be the best way to get the information that you are looking for. however has someone said before me its not free. keep in mind car fax has a disclaimer about the web site. it says something on the lines that car fax does not take responsibility for the information you are about to read they base their information on the information of other sources. and they only report what they report. they are not responsible for the accuracy of it. if their is a accident on the report their is no way of telling how bad that accident was. has long has a insurance claim was put in its a accident. doesn't matter if it was just a bumper and a fender (which would be really nothing to worry about) or if the whole front end was replaced. they both will come up the same way. IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT IF THE CAR WAS IN A ACCIDENT, ASK THE SELLER IF YOU CAN TAKE THE CAR TO A BODY SHOP. THE BODY SHOP I'M SURE WILL CHARGE YOU FOR LOOKING OVER THE CAR BUT AT LEAST YOU WILL HAVE SOUND MIND. a body shop would be your way to go about it. if you really want to do it right.

Carfax.com but it's not free. I don't know of any free service; it's one of those things that's just made to be charged for.
