It is actually a type of whisky that is distilled at a single distillery, and which is 100% from a single type of malted grain (usually barley).

Most single malt whiskies are distilled using a pot still.

It is also the product of a single distillery.

Whisky is either blended or single. Blended whisky is usually cheaper because its a mixture or blend of several whisky's made from malt - thats sprouted barley - and grain alcohol, made from maize or corn. Single malt is the product of one distillery and its all made from barley, there is no maize in it. It usually has a smoother, less fiery taste. Its usually aged in barrels for 10, 12 or 25 years before its bottled and sold.

whiskey made from only one batch of malt, and aged by itself in one barrell.

most whiskeys are 'blended', meaning they take a bunch of single malts and mix them together to get a more complex flavor.
