I've been on several Disney Cruises, I absolutely love them. I was just on one in may! I don't think that you will find another cruise line with the same service, cleanliness, food, quality of the cruise, entertainment for the whole family and such a wonderful staff. I've been on almost every cruise line and I still think that Disney has just about the best staff. They go above and beyond to make sure that your trip is extra, extra special.
With a cruise, you can pretty much get it to fit any budget. Disney has 3, 4 and 7 night cruises, so depending on how long you go, that will change the price. You also have 12 categories, ranging from a smaller inside room at the bottom of the ship, to a huge suite. So, it just depends on how much you want to spend and what you are looking for.
The best time to go really depends on what you are looking for. Any time you go during the peak seasons, like summer, it will most likely be a full ship. Also, the islands may be a little busier, but, more things will be open. Also, the prices will be higher. If you go during the off season, like hurricane season, you will have lower prices and fewer people, but some things on the islands may be closed, if you have children, not all the activities may be open, etc. I like going during off season, but each person will be different. Really, any time is great.
Are they worth the money? Absolutely! If you love Disney, you will have a great time and will probably enjoy the cruise more than any other line, you always have that touch of Disney Magic! I consider cruising to be the real vacation. For instance, if you go to Disney, you are constantly running, fighting crowds, standing out in the hot sun, etc. On a cruise, you don't have to do that. Everything is within a few minutes, you can eat all you want, even with a full ship it never is really crowded, and the only thing you have to worry about is making it to dinner on time ;-) You really just sit back, relax and enjoy yourself.
My two suggestions if you want a Disney cruise. First, look for a travel agent that specializes in cruises and Disney. You won't pay any more to use them and in most cases with cruises, they will save you money. But, they can help you with the booking, set up transfer, pre-night stays, etc. They can also help you with insurance, answer any questions, prepare you for the cruise with an documents you need, etc. It will make the cruise that much smoother and more relaxing for you so that you don't have to deal with the stress.
Second, book as far in advance as possible. With cruises, the rates will increase as the ship fills. That means, the closer you are to departure, the higher the rate will be. You get the lowest rates the day the cruise opens for booking and they will start to increase from there.
My travel agent often has group rates available that can save me money on the cruises. Sometimes it may only be a small difference, but she has also saved me hundreds of dollars on a trip, so that really is a benefit to using an agent as well.
I hope this helps, if you have any other questions I am happy to help!
