Used to represent a "life-style", it was very smartly advertised in the 50´s and 60´s, and must of the famous people around the world used to smoke, even public presenters and performers used to do this in front of the camera, so there were 3 or 4 generations that growth with that cliche of smoking is cool, but from 80 to our days, there is being a social campaign of consciousness of the big damage it can produce to human body, so nothing cool with smoking anymore, other than a teen-age believe the top of the adult by smoking...

The whole point of smoking.... "hole" would mean a space void of matter or content. The entire point of smoking---would take far more pages than are available here. Tobacco has been around since the beginning of farming.

However, instead of leaving tobacco in its natural state, the large Tobacco companies decided they would add a few chemicals to the leaves that would make tobacco more addicting; which, in turn, would make people continue buy cigarettes. The tobacco companies, in a way, were dope dealers putting their addictive junk into a, normally, natural leaf product.

Tobacco contains the alkaloid nicotine, a powerful neurotoxin that is particularly harmful to insects. All means of consuming tobacco result in the absorption of nicotine in varying amounts into the user's bloodstream, and over time the development of tolerance and dependence. Absorption quantity, frequency and speed seem to have a direct relationship with how strong a dependence and tolerance, if any, might be created. A lethal dose of nicotine is contained in as little as one half of a cigar or three cigarettes; however, only a fraction of the nicotine contained in these products is actually released into the smoke, and most clinically significant cases of nicotine poisoning are the result of concentrated forms of the compound used as insecticides. Other active alkaloids in tobacco include harmala alkaloids.

Major hazards of smoking tobacco, however, involve carcinogenic compounds in tobacco and tobacco smoke (The use of smokeless tobacco does not reduce these hazards). Many jurisdictions have enacted smoking bans in an effort to minimize possible damage to public health caused by today's "tained" tobacco.

Some people do it when they start a diet (instead of putting food in their mouth they put a cigarette) This is obviously not intelligent because they may not be eating but they end up not exercising either, so their problems become worse.

Some people start smoking when they drink. There are a lot of "social smokers" out there that never get "addicted" to it but they like the combination of smoking and drinking.

Then obviously there are the people who do it when they are young to be accepted or to be what they think is cool. There have been a lot of studies where they found out that more uneducated people smoke then people who are considered intelligent. Also, people who are below poverty lines have a higher smoking rate.

One set of people that I find it unfortunate is the people who started smoking when it was socially accepted. These are our parents and grandparents. Smoking used to be so socially accepted that they could even smoke in hospitals and grocery stores. Most people felt there was little if any danger in smoking. I believe the warnings about cigarettes and smoking came in the late 70's or early 80's with the surgeon general warning on the side of the pack. So for years prior people felt that if it is legal and available then it is safe. The same stands currently stands true for high frucose corn syrup. Check out the ingredients in most of the foods in your home. You will see it in everything from bread, drinks, cereal, sauces...etc. It is an ingredient that is put in most American processed foods but not as overused in other countries (coke in europe or other areas has sugar as an ingredient... in the u.s. it is high frucose corn syrup.) There is some speculation that this is partically what is making so many americans fat. So, I guess what I am saying is that there was a set of people who smoked because they were unaware of the dangers of smoking... just as the same there are people who are eating and unaware of the dangers of eating processed high frucose corn syrup.

Three of the main reasons that young people smoke are to look mature, to be like their friends, and to experiment. Since teens see older people all around them smoking, especially their parents and relatives, they smoke to act older. If their friends or peers smoke, they may feel pressured into doing the same to be accepted. The last reason is the excitement of experimenting with something that is forbidden. In the U.S. it is against the law for anyone under 18 years old to smoke. Usually parents do not allow their under age teens to smoke. Therefore, smoking becomes very attractive. It is exciting to get cigarettes and sneak away to smoke without being caught.

Adults smoke for other reasons. They may have a lot of stress and pressures because of economic and personal problems. They may be unemployed or working but not making enough money to take care of themselves and their families. They may be homeless, or they may be dealing with alcohol or cocaine/heroin addictions. Some may be in bad marriages or relationships in which there is physical and/or verbal abuse. All these people may smoke to feel relaxed or to give them energy while going through a hard time.

Whether young or old, some people smoke to control their weight. Smokers, on the average, weigh seven pounds less than non-smokers. Smoking reduces a person's appetite. It lessens his/her sense of taste and smell. This could be why ex-smokers gain weight after quitting cigarettes. Food tastes and smells so much better.

Finally, there are people who say they love to smoke. Smoking gives them pleasure. It just makes them feel good.

First I must ask, smoking what?Cigarettes. I started smoking when I was 13, I am now 38. I started because I thought I looked so cool and older. Well it certainly makes a person look older alright by aging them faster. Well, what I discovered is how stupid it all really looks and how bad it makes you smell. Been trying to quit for a year but all I've suceeded in doing id cutting down. I'm still trying to quit.

It has nothing to do with looking cool, for one. Grow up, guys.

People smoke because it takes their minds off of things. Nicotine makes you feel less stressed out and more calm, especially for someone who has smoked before. It obviously doesn't have the sort of effects that Marijuana has, but it does take people's minds off of things.

People who fidget and are constantly moving are more susceptible to smoking. They fidget to take their mind away from the present, which is the same reason that a large percenatge of people smoke.

Indeed, some people began smoking to try and look cool, but those that continue to smoke either do it because it helps them be less stressed, or they find it very difficult to quit.

If you smoke, a sure sign that it is destroying your body is that first you stink, then your teeth turn yellow, then your lungs blacken on the inside (they really do), then you forget how to spell. Looks like you are in the terminal phase. But don't worry, it's not too late to quit.

"Cigarettes are a habit/cigars and pipes are a hobby." Cigarettes have hazards disproportionate to any pleasure one can derive. Cigars, and particularly pipes, can be relaxing. The dirty little secret about pipes is that you really don't smoke them much: you fill 'em, tamp 'em, light 'em, tamp 'em again, hold 'em, philosophize about 'em, but don't get that much smoking done! The critical thing is to NOT get in someone else's face about it, and for Pete's sake, lean up after yourself (don't throw the butts onthe ground).
