IT DEPENDS ON THE INSURANCE COMPANY. WE HAVE REPLACED FRAMES ON VEHICLES PLENTY OF TIMES. THAT DOES NOT TOTAL A VEHICLE. IF THE REPAIR OF THE VEHICLE IS EXPECTED TO COST MORE THAN THE BOOK VALUE OF THE CAR, THE INSURANCE COMPANY WILL TOTAL IT EVERY TIME. SOME INSURANCE COMPANIES HAVE SET GUIDELINES...LIKE IF THE REPAIR IS EXPECTED TO BE 90 PERCENT OF THE BOOK VALUE OR 80 PERCENT. A LOT OF TIMES IF THE ESTIMATED REPAIR IS GOING TO COST 80 PERCENT, ONCE YOU GET INTO THE DAMAGE YOU NEED EXTRA PARTS THAT WILL RAISE THE REPAIR COST, SO JUST ABOUT EVERY INSURANCE COMPANY HAS THEIR OWN SET AMOUNT. ALSO SOME WILL TOTAL VEHICLES FOR FLOODS AND SUCH WITHOUT EVER LOOKING AT THEM BECAUSE THEY KNOW THE VEHICLE WILL BE PLAGUED WITH PROBLEMS FOREVER.

When your insurance company adjuster says so, based upon cost to repair versus value of the car.

when the damages goe through the car (i.e., a light pole goes through the top and bottom of the car). Basically if it cost too much to get it fixed (i.e., price of a NEW! car) or if its stupid to waste all that time (and $$$) to fix the roof, interior, engine, hood, wheel, etc for one little hole from a pole......hey that rhymes......busta!
