There are tons of scholarships that go unclaimed each year. Many $400, $500 or $1000 scholarships never even get applied for because people think it's chump change and not worth applying for. Well, get a few of those $500 scholarships and it'll really make a dent in your tuition bill.

Do a search on scholarships, search your major, your ethnic heritage, your town, your parents employers, your employer, hobbies, high school, local chamber of commerce/rotary/ lion's club etc. Left-handed? There is a scholarship out there for you! Older woman returning to school? There are scholarships out there for you. Do combined searches on more than one criteria "hispanic women aviation scholarships" etc.

Go to the library and ask the reference librarian for a reference book on scholarships. They usually have more than one. There are all kinds of scholarships out there, you just have to start applying yourself and make it your summer career to send out letters everyday for scholarships. Good luck!

First, see if your school offers federal student aid. If they do, apply for it via http://www.fafsa.ed.gov . If you are an undergraduate, this application will establish your eligibility for federal/state grant aid, work-study, and low-interest student loans. If you are (or will be) an undergraduate, once you turn 24, you will be considered "independent" which can make you eligible for a whole host of additional aid. You can read about the application and the eligibility criteria here at http://www.finaid.org/fafsa/

Now, most people need more than just federal aid to finance their educations. If you are committed attending your school of choice, you probably won't get there by resigning yourself to the fact that you "aren't a self-starter." While I don't want to imply that you can "haggle" with a Financial Aid Office or an organization, it is true that, of all the needy applicants out there, the people who obtain the most aid are those who are proactive, self-motivated, and aren't afraid to ask questions.

Look for as many scholarships as you can. Libraries, high schools, churches, clubs/associations in your area usually all have scholarship listings. Better yet, there are many that you can find from the comfort of your own home, online. Try registering with any or all of these scholarship search engines:

http://www.fastweb.com
http://www.srnexpress.com
http://www.scholarships.com
http://www.scholarships101.com

Then, write a scholarship essay (ideally, one that will work for several scholarship organizations). Generally, these organizations want to know what sets you apart from their other applicants, why they should pick you. I think you have a good "hook" -- how many applications do you think they get from young, female, heavy equipment operators? My guess: very few. Think about what makes you unique and go from there.
