Vultures have the biggest wing surface to body size ratio of all birds. The can soar more than 3 km above ground on hot air currents. Question is: Why would they (or any bird) WANT to go higher? They should still be able to detect food on the ground - a stronger behavioral cue than ability to fly high.

There was a case of a mallard duck striking an aeroplane at 2100 feet which is widely regarded as the highest bird flight recorded even though i believe the duck isn't around to prove it and also well done to the pilot for identifying a mallard duck at 600 mph as it whizzes by the cockpit in tatters

As an ex pilot I can say it is recorded that a RAF 'Vulcan' bomber hit a flock of birds at 32,000 ft over the Arctic, and that they did damage the the port outer engine so much so that it was scrapped when we landed. All we could see was masses of ukkkk nothing was identifiable except for some shreds of feathers and some blood
