I have an XC rig with an all Shimano setup and an all-mountain bike with SRAM, and I have to say that I like the XT stuff better. You're starting to see a lot of SRAM parts on bikes because they treat bike manufacturers better than Shimano does, but that doesn't mean that the parts are better. I was excited to try out the SRAM setup because of all the cool press they'd been getting, but I think it's more due to Americans loving everything American rather than any real improvements over Shimano's setups. The thing is, 'Made in USA' doesn't mean quality anymore, so there's no inherent advantage to an American company over an Asian one -- especially as most of the best *frames* are actually coming out of Asian factories, though they have US names on them...
But at the end of the day, both companies make good stuff. I just don't like the feel of the SRAM stuff

At the moment I believe that Shimano holds the market on components and availability. Sram also has great components and in the past was alittle pricey, but now seem to be their competing as far as price. I have and run both and each do a great job. To choose one , I'd have to go with Sram.
As long as were asking this question, what happened to Campy?

Shimano has real outstanding tech products---especially the 'Saint' gears they made. SRAM really have smart and very convenient GRIP shifters ( which I truly find a BLAST to use)----Shimano has excelled in the XTR when it comes to CRAFTSMANSHIP---so i'd say I WON'T compare the 2 when it comes to competition. Shimano has SO MANY....cranksets, derailleurs, brake sets, hubs---so SRAM ain't that got that much products BUT THEY HAVE BEEN USED BY THE PROS. Need I say MORE?

Both preform well, but Shimano is easier to get cheep and to service by yourself. Shimano is also easier to upgrade. Sram has two different derailer types that require different shifters to run. I don't care where they are made, I'm looking for ease and performance.

That's like asking me to choose between herpes and syphilus--
to give you good advice I need more info anyhow--road? dirt ?utility ??Do you believe your dollar is your vote? Do you care what the company is doing for the people in the third world countries where they make their parts(shitmatohno is good in this aspect),do you care about design life-replaceability servixce ability--all of these things that sway the equation one way or the other- I have chosen and out of my extensive quiver of bicycles not one has shimano or sram...except fo an odd crank here or shifter there...
