Sin supernatural idea of a wrong doing in the eyes of God. It is a made up concept used by Priests to garner and maintain power.
That goes for the concept of "evil" too.

Okay, you know how they say deviance is relative? What is accepted in one culture is shunned in another? Well, that is not the case when dealing with sin. Sin is sin, regardless of whether we want to admit it. You can't give a definition of sin, without a Biblical explanation, because the Bible is where "sin
came from. Sin is described in the Bible as transgression of the law of God (1 John 3:4) and rebellion against God (Deuteronomy 9:7; Joshua 1:18). There are 3 types of sin, Inherited sin, imputed sin, and personal sin.
About your last comment - To us, God is not fair. In reality, God is gracious to some, but fair to everyone. We are finite creatures, we can not grasp all of the reasons that something happens. No on can truly say "I have lived a perfect life and deserve this and that". We all deserve to burn in hell, anything better than that is God's grace.

You state that you are studying to be a pastor, then you know that you cannot separate your question from a Bible answer.
The Bible clearly states that sin is the transgression of the Law. It is rebellion against God.
And since ...
(Proverbs 14:12 KJV) There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
...any definition by man can very well be fatally incorrect.
If I may be so bold, you may want to continue studying what the Bible says about your question, and not worry about what man says.

There are more issues at stake here than what is sin - but sin is the very essence of all mankind - and without Jesus, as you know, that sin has a death penalty that you will pay in separation for all eternity in hell - Satan likes it very much that you have given into your desires and suppressed God now - that gives him victory in his life - you will recall Paul's own story. But a simple version of sin - as though you have ears to hear - is sIn - putting I before the Son of God and Not relying on the Holy Spirit. The other issues cannot resolve themselves within your Spirit until you overcome the sIn issue.

Forget the Biblical concept of "sin", which is essentially going against God's law. It is a tool of fear and control that churches use to keep the flock afraid in their control. The real danger is that many people who have committed so called "sins" can never really forgive themselves even if the church tells them they are forgiven.
The Ten Commandments are antiquated rules that are meant to be broken, e.g. "honor thy father..". Well what about a child who has been sexually violated by a father. Could any of us, possibly understand why that girl would not "honor" her father. That's no sin and that's just one example.
Sin is really about forsaking your own values and moral code and also about knowing and breaking the standards of the community and the natural laws of society. Sin is about about not respecting the Golden Rule. Sin is about creating more evil than good in our world.
Sin is about not forgiving.

God does not choose a person's destiny. They choose it themselves because they have been offered eternal life and when they rejected it, they basically said that they would rather go to hell and pay for it there. Sin is simply anything that goes against what God intends to be. God does not expect us to give up our desires and abide by a strict set of rules. That's not Christianity.Christianity is about being free from sin. Sinful pleasures are good only for a while and then they make us feed them so that we are become slaves to them. God hates sin and does not tolerate it but He allows us to make a choice. He does not force Himself or anything on us.

To disregard the known commandments of God sent through His messengers.
Doing any social ill that can harm any individual or a society.
Committing a social offense culpable under the laws of the land you are living in.
Disrespecting the ethics and believes of other religions.
Humiliating human beings.
Supporting those committing sins.
.... and things like that ..... List can be long but the message is clear I hope.

The Law is spiritual. If you are born again than honor your father ...IN HEAVEN.
I will not go into specifics on this. I will just leave you a web-site that may help you see that all of your biblical studying and schooling did not give you the truth.

God never claimed to be fair or kind, he's described as a vengeful God in the old testament.
Sin by definition is anything that departs from God's will, but that really depends on what his will for you is now doesn't it?

Sin means to miss the mark. In this case it is not doing what God wants you to do.
