And Didn't Hitler and Nazi Germany start out this way?
I introduce you to Pastor Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) of Topeka, Kansas.
This pastor and his church hate America and Americans who are not members of their church. They love to hate American soldiers and more than anything they hate "fags". They thank God for AIDS, for soldiers killed in war and for the 9-11 Attack. They cheer and celebrate the deaths of soldiers and homosexuals and harass family and friends at funerals. The call natural disasters that kill thousands of people "God's will."
WBC believes in "opposing the homosexual lifestyle of soul-damning, nation-destroying filth. We display large, colorful signs containing Bible words and sentiments, including: GOD HATES FAGS, FAGS HATE GOD, AIDS CURES FAGS, THANK GOD FOR AIDS, FAGS BURN IN HELL, GOD IS NOT MOCKED, FAGS ARE NATURE FREAKS, GOD GAVE FAGS UP, NO SPECIAL LAWS FOR FAGS, FAGS DOOM NATIONS, etc. "

Yeah Hitler and the Nazi regime was just like this... in a way. Hitler was putting all the blame for World War I war debt on the Jews, gays, blacks, gypsies, etc. though, too.
This so-called "Christian" church is a horrible testament to their religion. They preach hatred instead of love. They condemn those that fight to protect them so that they can preach their hatred. I'm glad that law banning them from funerals was enacted. They may have freedom of speech, but it is in bad taste to protest at a funeral. Leave the families alone, they've went through enough already.

Mainstream Christianity disagrees with Phelps' opinions, methods, and attitudes. I think we are all in agreement that what he's doing and how he treats people is wrong, wrong, wrong.
Accordingly, Westboro only has about 70 people in their "church" (in a nation of 280 million people).
If they weren't so vocal and hateful in their activities, they wouldn't even make a blip on the map, nor do they deserve any exposure they get. (The only bad part about the current lawsuit in Maryland against them is that they are getting more press.)
As far as their "free speech to protest" goes, I find it disgraceful they would protest a soldier who died in Iraq, disrupting his family's time of grief.
If they have a problem with the policies and want to really use "free speech," they should be protesting the White House, which made the decision to go to war.
I'm not sure how they can live with themselves, ignoring the big fish to hurt the families of people who were just doing their jobs with dignity and honor. It's definitely not what Jesus would have done.

Sounds to me like he spent too few hours at school and too many hours listening to fundamentalist misinterpretation of the Bible. Ask any Jewish person regarding the actual interpretation of the story of Sodom and the he will tell you it is actually a moral about hard heartedness, in-hospitality, and rape. Mr. Phelps needs to spend more time studying history, archeology and anthropology. Too bad he has become so vocal with his misplaced views that he has become a joke. Perhaps that's the best answer to his outrageous behavior - we should all just laugh at him and his followers.
Mr. Phelps (notice I am not calling him Pastor) needs to look more at the human condition and learn compassion. Until that time, we must understand his short comings educationally and intellectually.

I've seen them on the news a few times and I am glad that soldiers family is suing them. I don't care how you feel about anyone you should never disrupt a persons funeral. It's the familiy's time to morn their loss. Pastor Phelps and his following need show some compassion. I don't think their "god" would want them to act like heartless pigs.

They are simply verbalizing what many Christians feel. People like Adolf Phelps are at the forefront of 'dominion theology'. Ra help us all if this type of psychosis spreads.

The second I saw your question I KNEW you were speaking of the Phelpses. They belong in hell. If the antichrist is born today, he most certainly will be a Phelps.

God will judge that Pastor harshly. Matthews 7:22-23 says: Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

I guess they skimmed the part of the bible where jesus asked, "who are you to point out the splinter in another's eye when you cannot see the log in your own?"
