The pub on the pier (Horatios) is a real dive, sadly. If you walk along the beach, there are plenty of bars which are good at night but in the day, it is clear they are club/bars and not so nice inside.

The Goldfish Bowl is nice, also just down the road towards the sea is a bar - cannot remember the name (begins with P?) decorated in a grey/wood colourscheme. It is reasonably priced and young without being chavvy.

The Cricketers is near the seafront (sea end of the Lanes) and has a trendy bar upstairs and a victorian one downstairs, which is cool ... but try finding a seat on a weekend!!!

Go to the royal albion hotel. No it is not expensive and a 5 minute walk to the pier. there is a bar in there that sells real ales , lager all at normal pub prices . The food ain't bad either.
pubs to avoid, both bars on the pier , over priced and served with attitude. If you do go in the lanes the only pub i recommend would be the pump house. Cheapest pub in Brighton is the fiddlers elbow £1.85 pint of strongbow , opposite wetherspoons on west street go down small alleyway, bit of a walk back to the pier though!

Terraces is a great place for lunch or supper and overlooks the sea at the Pier end of Brighton. Reasonably priced. Great Mussels. Been there several times and never been disappointed.
